WELSH Penrhyn Heather Blue
Penrhyn Heather Blue slate, also known as Bangor Blue and Penrhyn Purple is produced from a fine grained slate deposit formed during the Cambrian period over 500 million years ago. Penrhyn quarry is at the heart of Snowdonia and is known as one of the largest slate quarries in the world. It has been in commercial production for over seven centuries, the properties of Penrhyn slate allow it to be split into thin sheets and still retains its strength and durability.
Penrhyn Welsh roofing slate is available in three thickness grades, Capital 5.5mm County 7mm and Celtic 9mm, the quality of the stone can allow for the production of slates in excess of 1 metre in length, although today the main production sizes is fixed to 4 product sizes

Penrhyn Capital grade is the thinnest selection, limited areas of the quarry produce the thin slate, historically these were distributed to the South of the UK, the thinner the selection the greater the number per ton and the more cost effective to deliver. Penrhyn County grade 7mm is the most popular selection traditionally sold into the North West and Midlands region, but now both of these slates are sold as far as Australia & New Zealand and other parts of the world. The thickest selection is the Celtic grade 9mm as the title suggest historically it was sold to face the westerly winds of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, has a slightly greater element of surface texture and dressed edge giving the slate a more rural appeal although nowadays it does find its way into towns and cities on projects where it can be used to make a statement.

Absorbs less the 0.3% of water, highly resistant to acid and alkali to keep its natural colour even in ultra violet light
