WELSH Cwt y Bugail Blue Grey
Cwt-y-Bugail Welsh natural roofing slate is produced in a dark blue-grey colour and can have slight veins of white with a unique textured surface. The quarry is located to the east of Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales. It has been producing slates since the 1840’s, the deposits were formed during the Ordovician period over 470 million years ago. The slate has a distinctive banding known as relic bedding which gives the slate an extremely uniform characteristic, it is an unfading slate, and based upon its longevity of use is known to many as the one of the finest roofing slates in the World.
Cwt y Bugail Welsh roofing slate is available in three thickness grades, Capital 5.5mm County 7mm and Celtic 9mm, the quality of the stone can allow for the production of slates in excess of 1 metre in length, although today the main production sizes is fixed to 4 product sizes

Cwt y Bugail Capital grade is the thinnest selection, limited areas of the quarry produce the thin slate, historically these were distributed to the South of the UK, the thinner the selection the greater the number per ton and the more cost effective to deliver. Cwt y Bugail County grade 7mm is the most popular selection traditionally sold into the North West and Midlands region, but now both of these slates are sold as far as Australia & New Zealand and other parts of the world. The thickest selection is the Celtic grade 9mm as the title suggest historically it was sold to face the westerly winds of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, has a slightly greater element of surface texture and dressed edge giving the slate a more rural appeal although nowadays it does find its way into towns and cities on projects where it can be used to make a statement.
